What is it

Architectural Decision Records are a collection of documents recording architectural decisions in the form of a decision log. It is a lightweight process designed to help with exploring and discussing architectural decisions, agreeing and taking these decisions within the team and documenting them for reference. ADRs can also be used for communicating with stakeholders and other teams.

When to use it

ADRs can help your team if you have a need for:

  • formalizing and taking decisions democratically
  • documenting decisions taken by the team for reference
  • spreading knowledge of decisions across teams and roles
